The piece seeks to represent blood cells as a constellation and to make tangible and visible my condition of Von Willebrand Disease.

Blue cobalt ceramic forms represent blood platelets, crucial to clotting. Platelets are inhibited by a lack of clotting factor in people with Von Willebrand Disease and Haemophilia. So clots do not form, hence the blue to show inability (platelets are normally yellow).

Platelets change from disc shapes to long spidery extensions when activated, but are compromised by the lack of clotting proteins (clotting factors), consequently they are truncated star like forms.

White blood cells protect the body from infection; bacteria and viruses. They have a spherical shape with projections from the surface. 

Black ceramic star like forms represent viruses. Contaminated blood products given to people with Von Willebrand Disease and Haemophilia have caused thousands of deaths and continues to kill sufferers.
